Most of us know that it matters what we put in our bodies, but did you ever think about the lotion or shampoo you are using?
Unlike the food industry, the skincare and beauty industry is highly unregulated. The FDA does not have the authority to remove harmful ingredients from the products we put on our bodies and our families’ bodies every day. Odds are you can’t read all of the ingredients on the back of your lotion or face wash like you can on a jar of peanut butter.
None of the soaps, lotions, make-up, and hair products are being tested or regulated. It wasn’t until repeated complaints and deaths that Johnson & Johnson had to pay $4.7 billion to settle a lawsuit for knowingly producing body powder that contained talc, a chemical known to cause cervical cancer.
Although the industry isn’t regulated, you can download “EWG’s Healthy Living App” or the Healthiest Chrome plug-in to help you find the safest products. Your goal should be to do everything in your power to minimize the toxic load in your body.
I use Beautycounter for all of my make-up and personal care products because I can trust that their products are safe but still high performing. They test every ingredient against the highest standards and have placed over 1,800 ingredients on their “Never List.” I believe in their mission to elevate the standards for the entire industry by advocating for more federal laws to regulate personal care products and educating the public about what they are putting on their bodies.
This topic is something I am incredibly passionate about, so please reach out if you have any questions.
